All fired up
Sharon | October 6, 2011At the famous Elphin Chicken day a couple of weeks back we had to leave our experimental pottery firing to cool down. So it was great to be at Elphin yesterday and get our first glimpse of the surviving pots. And impressive they are too, with the definite ping of fired clay when you tap them with your fingers.
The modern clay did much better once it had been packed inside with flammable material and a fire built around it, together with grass cuttings to quell the flames to ensure a longer burn.
What is still remarkable is that the locally dug clay survived the best in these open fire experiments, staying in the fire all afternoon and coming out whole.
Brenda is encouraged to try out more ideas and we’re looking forward to more experimental pot making and firing next year.
